6/9/2021 – We joined with the Administrative Office of the Courts, Georgia Justice Project (GJP), and Georgia Legal Services Program to present the Record Restriction Educational Town Hall by Zoom. The event was well attended by local officials from the Superior, State, and Municipal Courts of the Macon Judicial Circuit. The event was a part of DA Anita Howard’s Changing the Face of Justice Day. The event was also well attended by registrants interested in learning more about what Georgia law provides as to ways to get relief from their criminal history. The 55 people who attended the session now have two weeks to apply for assistance. MGJ will receive the applications and assist the applicants in getting their GCIC reports. Mercer Law students will help with processing the reports which will be screened by GJP and MGJ.The last step will be to pair applicants with attorneys who will handle their particular needs. We are grateful for all the folks who participated and especially Paige Jann with GJP who did the instructional portion of the event.
1/15/2021 – MGJ President Bill Adams appeared on a panel at the January Zoom meeting of the Macon Bar Association. The topic for the panel was “Taking Care of Our Community: Exploring Pro Bono Legal Challenges Presented by the COVID-19 Pandemic.” The other panelists were Rick Rufolo and Shannon Mills from GLSP, Rick Waller from the Public Defender’s Office, and Jamie Boren from the Crisis Line & Safe House. During the program, panelists were asked to address the call to public service placed upon attorneys by Rule 6.1 of the Rules of Professional Conduct and specific ways that participants can support our local public service agencies in response to that call. Adams talked about MGJ’s Justice Brigade as one way local lawyers can sign up to volunteer their time to help citizens who cannot afford the legal assistance they need.
